France will start stopping migrant vessels in English Channel after British demands
France has agreed to start intercepting migrant vessels in the Channel, after an extended period of insistence from the UK.
The change in policy follows the British leader wrote to the French leader urging him to support the plan and saying there currently "lack any effective deterrent" in the Channel.
French maritime police will be allowed to stop the small boats at sea, but only before they've picked up their migrants, according to authoritative statements.
French police have rarely intervened to stop the overcrowded boats departing from the coastline because it is viewed as too great a danger to both personnel and individuals.
"It is essential that we implement these tactics this period... We have zero effective prevention in the Channel."
Now, a French naval police representative states officers will begin taking action at sea, with the objective of protecting lives.
Notably, the spokesperson ruled out the use of entanglement devices to intercept boats, which had earlier been reported as a potential method to snarl the engines of the boats.
This determination to intervene at all is a major advancement, following a brief change towards a more aggressive approach this warmer season, which ceased when the previous government official left office.
This was demonstrated in July, preceding a meeting between the UK leader and President, when authorities were observed walking into the sea to damage the sides of a vessel.
Now French authorities will once more be permitted to intercept boats prior to they collect migrant individuals from the beaches of France's north coast, however it's not clear how the vessels will be prevented.
Powerful gusts are currently postponing the commencement of intervention operations and the people-smuggling networks will be looking for ways to adapt to evade interception, as they have done so often in the previous instances.
The Home Office and Downing Street have been approached for response.
