Astronaut Discloses Emotional Distress Following Wave of Backlash Following Journey

A pioneering space traveler has opened up regarding her emotional downturn after facing a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.

The 34-year-old activist – known as a scientist and civil rights advocate – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight in April, which also carried celebrity crewmates.

The much-publicized journey was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.

Reflecting on the experience, Ms. Nguyen, who became the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response overshadowed her achievement under an landslide of gendered hatred.

“I said the emotional pain might endure for years,” Ms. Nguyen stated in a social media post, referring to a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the days following the flight.

She portrayed the press attention and digital reaction as an unprecedented psychological assault.

“I did not leave Texas for a week, unable to get out of bed,” she wrote. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”

The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and performed experiments during the mission, said every professional achievement – from her scientific research and years of training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was overshadowed under the deluge of gendered attacks.

She is widely recognized for her pioneering work championing the cause of survivors of assault.

Her own dream of becoming an astronaut was put on hold after being assaulted during her university years, leading to a protracted legal battle.

Months following reaching space, she reports that the “fog of grief has started to lift”, and she expressed gratitude the well-wishers whose kindness were her lifeline. “You all saved me,” she affirmed.

She concluded that amid the criticism, important benefits had emerged from the flight, such as elevated attention for her women's health research and chances to influence leaders.

About the Mission

The self-operating New Shepard rocket departed Texas in the spring, carrying the six-woman crew on a short trip that passed the edge of space.

The diverse crew also included accomplished professionals from different industries.
